ANALYSIS: Joe Rossi finally has the whole defense in his room
No longer tied to one position group, Michigan State’s defensive coordinator is using his new freedom to build a defense and connect the Spartans

For most of Joe Rossi’s coaching career, there has always been another title attached to his name.
Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Coordinator and position coach. Someone responsible for the entire defense, but also tethered to one room within it.
Not anymore.
Under Pat Fitzgerald, Rossi is focused solely on coordinating Michigan State’s defense. Four practices into preseason camp, that change is already allowing Rossi to do something he believes could make the entire unit better.
He can teach the defense rather than just a position.
