As wins build, Michigan State women’s soccer and volleyball are helping each other along

Jeff Hosler’s advice helped Kristen Kelsay navigate a breakthrough win, while a weekend of mutual support highlighted the connection among MSU's teams

Michigan State’s women’s soccer team followed volleyball’s comeback win at USC on its bus ride home Sunday, with cheers coming five to 10 seconds apart because of uneven Wi-Fi connections, coach Jeff Hosler said.

After finding their own late winner at Illinois, the Spartans were rooting for another MSU team to finish a difficult road victory.

For Hosler and volleyball coach Kristen Kelsay, it was another example of a relationship that has become part of their teams’ successful starts.

That support had already reached from an office at Michigan State to the stands at UCLA. Along the way, it helped Kelsay work through a question her program hopes to face more often: How do you keep a team moving forward after a breakthrough win?

Last Wednesday, following both teams’ practices, Hosler stopped by Kelsay’s office. With volleyball coming off its upset of Penn State and preparing for a trip to Los Angeles, she asked for his perspective.

They talked for an hour.
