INSIDER: As an athletic department, Michigan State is learning to push back
Under Pat Fitzgerald and Dan Bartholomae, the Spartans are showing a greater willingness to defend their people, challenge decisions, and use their home-field advantage

Sources tell Spartans Illustrated that the approach under Pat Fitzgerald and athletic director Dan Bartholomae is different from what came before. There is a greater willingness to challenge decisions, defend their people, and press advantages Michigan State has too often left unused.
The clearest public example yet unfolded Saturday against Illinois, during a sequence that brought together the head coach, the stadium operation, and a crowd that could see exactly what was happening. But an earlier decision to stand behind a player facing a publicly reported allegation had already offered a more consequential indication of that resolve.
