INSIDER: What is really happening with Jaxon Kohler’s unexpected fifth-year possibility

Jaxon Kohler does not currently have a fifth season of college eligibility.

That has not stopped more than 20 programs from expressing interest in what could become one of the most unusual and consequential recruitments of the college basketball offseason.

The immediate reaction among Michigan State fans was far simpler: Bring him back. Reunite Kohler with Tom Izzo, add an experienced shooter and rebounder to a championship contender, and give a player who still considers himself a Spartan another opportunity to finish what he started in East Lansing.

Behind the scenes, almost nothing about the situation is that simple.

Michigan State constructed its roster under the assumption that Kohler’s college career was over. Returning players made decisions based on the opportunities in front of them, newcomers arrived with an understanding of their roles, and Izzo’s staff has spent months preparing for next season without Kohler in the frontcourt rotation.

The Spartans have not placed those plans on hold for a speculative legal argument that may never produce another season of eligibility.

That does not mean Kohler and Michigan State have stopped caring about one another. Izzo remains deeply invested in Kohler’s future, and Kohler’s connection to the program extends far beyond basketball. But a conversation between a coach and a former player about an unexpected possibility is not the same thing as Michigan State recruiting him back.

The obvious question is whether Kohler could return to East Lansing.

The more revealing question is whether he would even allow himself to do it if his return came at the expense of players who waited for the opportunities they now believe they have earned.
