The Michigan State Spartans kicked off their season with a decisive victory last Friday, August 29, defeating Western Michigan University 23-6. The atmosphere was electric at Spartan Stadium as players and fans alike celebrated a promising start to the season.
This week, freshman offensive lineman Stanton Ramil shared his insights into the game, revealing the mindset and preparations behind the team’s successful opener.
“Coach M just wants us to get plenty of reps early on. It’s about helping everyone get comfortable back out there,” Ramil explained about head coach Jonathan Smith’s strategic approach to player rotation. “So we rotate frequently, pretty much every series, to keep everyone fresh and sharp.”
The Spartans opened the game with a strong emphasis on the ground attack, showcasing their running game early and often. Nearly half of their first ten plays were on the ground, culminating in a highlight-reel touchdown by sophomore running back Brandon Tullis. It was a statement drive that set the tone for the game.
Ramil thought it was significant for the offensive line to put points on the board early in the season.
