SCOUT: What is Michigan State getting in five-star Antonio Pemberton

For decades, Michigan State’s best teams have been driven by outstanding point guard play.

From Mateen Cleaves to Kalin Lucas and Cassius Winston, Tom Izzo has traditionally entrusted his offense to a lead guard capable of controlling the game. Antonio Pemberton could eventually become the next player in that lineage.

Pemberton, a five-star point guard from Massachusetts, announced his commitment to Michigan State on Friday. He chose the Spartans from a group of finalists that included Kansas, UCLA, Ohio State, Tennessee, and Creighton, giving MSU one of the highest-upside guards in the 2027 recruiting class.

What stands out immediately when watching Pemberton is not elite explosiveness or overwhelming size. It is his pace.

The ball rarely seems to speed him up.

Pemberton has become one of the country’s fastest-rising guards because of his ability to control games as the primary ballhandler. He changes speeds exceptionally well, manipulates defenders in pick-and-roll situations, and consistently gets to his preferred spots. Evaluators on the Adidas circuit have praised his ability to direct an offense while remaining a high-level scorer.

That composure should give Pemberton a chance to adjust quickly to college basketball.
