Why Michigan State? Spartans explain what still sets Tom Izzo's program apart
During Moneyball ProAm, Michigan State's newcomers and returning players pointed to the same reasons they chose – and continue to choose – the Spartans in the NIL era
In today's college basketball landscape, players have more freedom than ever before. NIL opportunities and the transfer portal have transformed roster building, creating an environment where change has become the norm and loyalty often feels temporary.
Yet during this week's Moneyball ProAm, one theme surfaced again and again when Michigan State players were asked by Spartans Illustrated why they chose MSU – or why they decided to stay.
Culture.
Whether they were incoming freshmen beginning their college careers or returning veterans with opportunities to explore elsewhere, players consistently described a program built on trust, development and relationships. In an era increasingly defined by movement, they said those qualities continue to separate Michigan State.
Freshmen Carlos Medlock Jr., Ethan Taylor, and Julius Avent each arrived in East Lansing through different recruiting journeys, but their reasons for choosing Michigan State were strikingly similar.
